The Angel and the Little Scroll
Revelation 10:1 “I saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire;
10:2 and he had in his hand a little book which was open. He placed his right foot on the sea and his left on the land…
10:8 Then the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, ‘Go, take the book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land.’
10:9 So I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he said to me, ‘Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.’
10:10 I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.
10:11 And He said unto me, ‘Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.’ ”
The mystery of the Little Scroll:
I present my theory that this ‘little scroll’ that John was handed is the scroll/book/tablet written about in Isaiah 30:8. Readers, please understand this is purely speculative, but a strong possibility to consider.
“Now go, write it on a tablet before them And inscribe it on a scroll, That it may serve in the time to come As a witness forever.” – Isaiah 30:8
Isaiah 30:8 breakdown:
- it’s a scroll
- ‘before them’ (‘before many peoples’ – Revelation 10:11) means it is left open to read – it’s not sealed as other scrolls were (ie: Daniel 12:4) – so here is an open scroll like Revelation 10:2
- twice it’s described as a tablet/scroll/book – anytime something in the Bible is repeated, the reader should pay extra attention because it’s an important message
- ‘in the time to come’ – future time, Isaiah wrote about prophecies. John was instructed to prophesy concerning what was written on the scroll which he ate
- ‘as a witness’ – only the Lord Jesus Christ may be called ‘a witness’. For everyone else’s testimonies, two or more witnesses are always required – Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15. Whereas the Lord Jesus Christ stated: “ ‘If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.’ ” – John 5:31 and “ ‘I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.’ “ – John 8:18
- a witness forever
In the Book of Revelation, the Angel and the Little Scroll will occur right before the seventh trumpet and the rapture. John’s commanded to prophesy the Lord Jesus Christ’s imminent return as – ‘a witness forever’. What else could possibly be left to prophesy about – except to announce the glorious return of the Lord – the Faithful and True Witness – come to judge the world, in truth and righteousness.
Again, Revelation 10:11 reads,“And He said to me, ‘You must prophesy again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.’ ” A bitter-sweet prophecy for the whole world – one about either salvation or condemnation.
There isn’t a greater prophecy that John could be blessed to reveal. The disciple ‘whom Jesus loved’ (John 13:23), the only apostle faithful to stand at the foot of the cross (John 19:25-27), the man entrusted to write the Book of Revelation. And now John is bestowed the great honour and privilege of proclaiming the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, on the Day of the Lord.
“ ‘Therefore wait for Me,’ declares the LORD,
‘For the day when I rise up as a witness.’ ” – Zephaniah 3:8
