God is a Consuming Fire

The following is a selection of scripture verses on how God’s fire always has been and always will be central in His great and eternal plan:

Old Testament:

“So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.” – Genesis 3:24

“Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven.” – Genesis 19:24

“The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush.” – Exodus 3:2 – The Lord’s glory appeared as a fire

“There was hail, and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail, very severe, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.” – Exodus 9:24

“The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light.” – Exodus 13:21

“To the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.” – Exodus 24:17

“For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.” – Exodus 40:38

“Then the Lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire.” – Deuteronomy 4:12

“May our God come and not keep silence; fire devours before Him, and it is very tempestuous around Him.” – Psalm 50:3

“When I select an appointed time, it is I who judge with equity.  The earth and all who dwell in it melt; it is I who have firmly set its pillars.” – Psalm 75:2-3

“The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord.” – Psalm 97:5

“Its flashes are flashes of fire the very flame of the Lord.” – Solomon 8:6

“When the Lord has washed away the filth … by the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burning, then the Lord will create … the brightness of a flaming fire by night.” – Isaiah 4:4-5

“His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones.” – Jeremiah 20:9 (God’s Word is also God’s fire.  It is far better to be refined with the fire of God’s Word than to be consumed by His judgment fire.)

“… that My wrath may not go forth like fire and burn with none to extinguish it, because of the evil of their deeds.” – Jeremiah 21:12

” ‘Is not My word like fire?’ declares the Lord.” – Jeremiah 23:29

“In the tent of the daughter of Zion He has poured out His wrath like fire.” – Lamentations 2:4

“I will pour out My indignation on you; I will blow on you with the fire of My wrath.” – Ezekiel 21:31

“As they gather silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into the furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath and I will lay you there and melt you.” – Ezekiel 22:20

New Testament:

“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” – Matthew 3:11

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” – Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” – Mark 13:31

“John answered and said to them all, ‘As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ ” – Luke 3:16-17

“There appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.” – Acts 2:3-4

“Each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.” – 1 Corinthians 3:13

The Book of Revelation:

“His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire.  His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.” – Revelation 1:14-15

“Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder.  And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.” – Revelation 4:5

“If anyone wants to harm them [the two witnesses], fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies.” – Revelation 11:5

“The first [trumpet] sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.” – Revelation 8:7

“The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea.” – Revelation 8:8-9

“The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch …” – Revelation 8:10-11

“In one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her is strong.  The kings of the earth … see the smoke of her burning.” – Revelation 18:8-9

“The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone.” – Revelation 20:10

“If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:15

“Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.  This is the second death, the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:14

“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” – Revelation 21:8

 

2 Peter 3:

“But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.” – 2 Peter 3:7

“The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.” – 2 Peter 3:10

“Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat.” – 2 Peter 3:11-12

 

Make no mistake – we are in the End Times.

While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” – John 12:36
