The Fall of Babylon – Revelation 18

Revelation 18“After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illumined with his glory.  And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, ‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!  She has become a dwelling place of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit, and a prison of every unclean and hateful bird [metaphor].  For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the passion of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed acts of immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality.’ ” – Revelation 18:1-3

‘Earth mourns the destruction of Babylon’:

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery (immorality) with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.  Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, O Babylon, city of power!  In one hour your doom has come! ‘ ” – Revelation 18:9-10

“The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no-one buys their cargoes any more – cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men.” – Revelation 18:11-13

“The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment.  They will weep and mourn and cry out: ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!’ ” – Revelation 18:15-16

” ‘In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’  Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.” – Revelation 18:17

“When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city?’  They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: ‘Woe!  Woe, O great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth!  In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’ ” – Revelation 18:18-19

” ‘Rejoice over her, O heaven!  Rejoice, saints and apostles and prophets!  God has judged her for the way she treated you!’ ” – Revelation 18:20

A Scene in Heaven:

“And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, holding harps of God.  And they sang the song of Moses, the bond-servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, ‘Great and marvellous are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty; Righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations!  Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name?  For You alone are holy; For all the nations will come and worship before you, For Your righteous acts have been revealed.’ ” – Revelation 15:2-4

By his Hand we stand in victory

By his name we’ve overcome.

In darkest we worship you

You divide the raging seas

In Death to life you safely lead.
