The Assyrian aka the Beast

‘The Assyrian’ (Isaiah 31:8, Micah 5:5,6), plots to fight the Lord Jesus Christ at Megiddo but with simply the breath of the Lord’s mouth He will slay ‘the wicked one’ – Nahum 1:15.  “The Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming…” – 2 Thessalonians 2:8.

The following article is a compilation of Scripture verses on the Assyrian, the Beast, the Antichrist, Apollyon.

Isaiah 10

12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria (the Assyrian) and the pomp of his haughtiness.”

13 For he has said, “By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this, For I have understanding; And I removed the boundaries of the peoples And plundered their treasures, And like a mighty man I brought down their inhabitants, 14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a nest, And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; And there was not one that flapped its wing or opened its beak or chirped.”

24 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did.”

26 The LORD of hosts will arouse a scourge against him like the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb (Judges 7:25); and His staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be in that day, that his burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because of fatness.

Isaiah 14

Judgment on Assyria

24 The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: 25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

Isaiah 16

3 “Give us advice, make a decision; Cast your shadow like night at high noon; Hide the outcasts, do not betray the fugitive. 4 “Let the outcasts of Moab stay with you; Be a hiding place to them from the destroyer.” For the extortioner has come to an end, destruction has ceased, Oppressors have completely disappeared from the land.

Isaiah 30

31 For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.

32 And every blow of the rod of punishment, Which the LORD will lay on him, Will be with the music of tambourines and lyres; And in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight them.

33 For Topheth (this is hell, not Hades) has long been ready, Indeed, it has been prepared for the king (8th king – Revelation 17:11 – the beast – the Assyrian). He has made it deep and large, A pyre of fire with plenty of wood; The breath of the LORD, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.

AMP version of Isaiah 30:33 reads: “For Topheth [a place of burning and abomination] has already been laid out and long ago prepared; yes, for the [Assyrian] king”.

Isaiah 31

8 Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited. 9 “His rock will pass away because of panic, And his princes will be terrified at the standard,” Declares the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 33

Woe to the Spoiler of Jerusalem

1 Woe to you, O destroyer, While you were not destroyed; And he who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him. As soon as you finish destroying, you will be destroyed; As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will deal treacherously with you.

Jeremiah 30

8 ‘It shall come about on that day,’ declares the LORD of hosts, ‘that I will break his yoke from off their neck and will tear off their bonds; and strangers will no longer make them their slaves.’

Jeremiah 48

8 A destroyer will come to every city, So that no city will escape; The valley also will be ruined And the plateau will be destroyed, As the LORD has said.

Jeremiah 50

31 “Behold, I am against you, O arrogant one,” Declares the Lord GOD of hosts, “For your day has come, The time when I will punish you.

32 The arrogant one will stumble and fall With no one to raise him up; And I will set fire to his cities And it will devour all his environs.”

Daniel 7

8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn (the Assyrian/the Beast), a little one, came up among them…and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth uttering great boasts.

11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire.

20…that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts and which was larger in appearance than its associates. 21 I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them 22 until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom.

24 …and another will arise…and he will be different from the previous ones… 25 He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time (3 1/2 years).

26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever.

Daniel 8

The Little Horn

9 Out of one of them came forth a rather small horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land. 10 It grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth (fallen angels), and it trampled them down. 11 It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down. 12 And on account of transgression the host will be given over to the horn along with the regular sacrifice; and it will fling truth to the ground and perform its will and prosper.

23 In the latter period of their rulethe assyrian, When the transgressors have run their course, A king will arise (the Beast), Insolent and skilled in intrigue. 24 His power will be mighty, but not by his own power (Revelation 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard…And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority), And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree And prosper and perform his will; He will destroy mighty men and the holy people.

25 And through his shrewdness He will cause deceit to succeed by his influence; And he will magnify himself in his heart, And he will destroy many while they are at ease. He will even oppose the Prince of princes, But he will be broken without human agency. (Isaiah 31:8 And the Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man, And a sword not of man will devour him.)

Daniel 11

The King who exalts himself

36 Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done.

37 …he will magnify himself above them all…

39 He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to those who acknowledge him and will cause them to rule over the many, and will parcel out land for a price.

40 At the end time the king of the South will collide with him, and the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, with horsemen and with many ships; and he will enter countries, overflow them and pass through.

41 He will also enter the Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall…

42 Then he will stretch out his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. 43 But he will gain control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the precious things of Egypt…

44 But rumors from the East and from the North will disturb him, and he will go forth with great wrath to destroy and annihilate many.

45 He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

Micah 5

Deliverance and Destruction

5 …When the Assyrian invades our land, When he tramples on our citadels…And He will deliver us from the Assyrian When he attacks our land And when he tramples our territory.

Nahum 1

Destruction of Nineveh (the whole book of Nahum is prophesying its demise)

9 Whatever you devise against the LORD, He will make a complete end of it. Distress will not rise up twice…11 From you (Nahum chapter one writes about the Lord’s anger against Nineveh, Assyria) has gone forth One who plotted evil against the LORD, A wicked counselor.

12 Thus says the LORD, “Though they are at full strength and likewise many, Even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer. 13 So now, I will break his yoke bar from upon you, And I will tear off your shackles.

14 The LORD has issued a command concerning you: “Your name will no longer be perpetuated. I will cut off idol and image From the house of your gods. I will prepare your grave, For you are contemptible.”

15 Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace (Christ)! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Pay your vows. For never again will the wicked one pass through you; He is cut off completely.

Habakkuk 3

13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your anointed. You struck the head of the house of the evil To lay him open from thigh to neck. (Isaiah 31:8 ‘Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword’ – because it is not his time)

Zechariah 11

15 The LORD said to me, “Take again for yourself the equipment of a foolish shepherd.

(The Beast) 16 “For behold, I am going to raise up a shepherd (ruler) in the land who will not care for the perishing, seek the scattered, heal the broken, or sustain the one standing, but will devour the flesh of the fat sheep and tear off their hoofs.

17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd Who leaves the flock! A sword will be on his arm And on his right eye! His arm will be totally withered And his right eye will be blind.”

Malachi 3

11 “Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes,” says the LORD of hosts.

2 Thessalonians 2

Man of Lawlessness

1 Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, 2 that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.

5 Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? 6 And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. 8 Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; 9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, 10 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.

Book of Revelation

The Beast

The Scroll Opened
The First Seal – The False Christ

6:1 Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, “Come.”

6:2 I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

The Fifth Trumpet – the Bottomless Pit

9:11 They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.

The Witnesses Killed and Raised

11:7 When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them.

Doom for Worshipers of the Beast

14:9 Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand,
14:10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

14:11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.

14:12 Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

The Beast from the Sea

13:1 And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names.

13:3 I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast;

(Tries to copy Christ’s death and resurrection – Revelation 1:18 – “I Am the Living One.  I was dead, and now…I am alive forever…”)

13:2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority.

13:4 they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?”

13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.

13:7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.

13:5 There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him.

13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven.

13:9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear.

13:10 If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints.

The Beast from the Earth

13:11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon.

13:12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed.

13:16 And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead,

(Foreheads being marked is also mentioned in Ezekiel 9:4)

13:17 and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name.

13:13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men.

(The false prophet is copying Elijah who called down fire on Mount Carmel – 1 Kings 18:36-39.  Also, 2 Kings 1:10-14 when Elijah again called down fire from heaven to consume King Ahab’s men sent to arrest him.)

13:14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life.

(A parody on Nebuchadnezzar’s 90 foot gold idol.  Also Daniel 3:1-6 – ‘and the nations are commanded to worship it.’)

(‘Come to life’ – in today’s day and age, it might even be a hologram.)

13:15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.

Fifth Bowl of God’s Wrath

16:10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain,

16:11 and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores; and they did not repent of their deeds.

The Doom of Babylon

17:3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns…

17:7 And the angel said to me, “Why do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.

17:8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come.

(‘Was – is not – will come’ – parody of God and Christ – Revelation 1:4, 1:8 and 4:8 – God is called ‘the one who was and who is and who is to come’.)

17:9 Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits, (The seven mountains are the ‘Seven Mountains of Societal Influence’ – controlled by her, the false church.)

17:10 and they are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while.

17:11 The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction.

17:12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour.

17:13 These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.

17:17 For God has put it in their hearts to execute His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God will be fulfilled…

17:16 And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire.

Victory for the Lamb

17:14 “These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.”

The Sixth Bowl of Wrath (preparation for Armageddon)

16:13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs;

16:14 for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty.

Revelation 19

The Rider on the White Horse

19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

19:12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and

He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.

19:13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

19:16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

19:14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.

19:19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.

19:15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.

14:20 And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.

19:17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God,

19:18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.”

19:21 And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

Doom of the Beast and False Prophet

19:20 And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.

Satan Bound

20:1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.

20:2 And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;

20:3 and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.

Satan Freed, Doomed – After the Thousand Years

20:10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Conclusion:

The Old Testament tells how God used Assyria to punish the ten northern tribes of Israel due to their apostasy and pride.  Assyria conquered and dispersed them to other countries in 721 BC.

The Lord plans to once again use the Assyrian to punish and humble the whole world due to its sin.  This time it will be by a single man, not a whole kingdom.

Isaiah 10:5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. 6 I send it against a godless nation And commission it against the people of My fury…

The whole world will experience the terror of the Antichrist because of its unrepentance and wickedness.

Psalm 59:12 On account of the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, Let them even be caught in their pride, And on account of curses and lies which they utter. 13 Destroy them in wrath, destroy them that they may be no more; That men may know that God rules in Jacob To the ends of the earth.

Colossians 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience.

But the saved “turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.” – 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10.  Believers in Christ will indeed experience trials and tribulations – “in the world you have tribulation” – John 16:33.  It’s from the insufferable wrath of God they will be spared.  “for God has not destined us for wrath” – 1 Thessalonians 5:9

Once the Lord’s wrath against the world has been avenged and His anger ceased, the Assyrian himself will be destroyed by God Almighty:

Isaiah 14:24 The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

26 “This is the plan devised against the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out against all the nations. 27 “For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ today and be saved.  Spend eternity in the love of our Master and Saviour.
