Matters of the Heart

What the Bible says about the Matters of the Heart

“treasuring up all these matters in her heart” – Luke 2:51

“For the Lord your God is testing you to find out if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” – Deuteronomy 13:3

The following is an interesting study on the word ‘heart’.  It provides a great deal of wisdom for the discerning.

Both the Hebrew and Greek languages treated the heart as the centre of a person’s being, the seat of all feelings and thoughts.  We do the same in English.

The word heart appears almost 900 times in the Bible.

Nearly always the word is used symbolically in reference to the deep essence of a person’s soul.  It is also used occasionally to refer to the innermost part of physical objects (ie: ‘the heart of the earth’ – Matthew 12:40).

The symbolic use refers to the ‘thoughts’ of the heart.  Somehow, before one thinks with his mind, he thinks with his heart, and these deep, unspoken thoughts will determine the way he reasons with his brain.  Jesus confirmed this: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts …” – Mark 7:21

The first time the word ‘heart’ is used in the Bible is when writing about the corruption on the earth right before the Great Flood:

“Every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” – Genesis 6:5

How important it is then to maintain a heart that is pure.  In fact, in sharp contrast to the first occurrence of ‘heart’ in the Old Testament referring to man’s evil thoughts, the first occurrence in the New Testament is in the gracious promise of Christ: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” – Matthew 5:8

The Bible covers the whole gamut of human feelings using ‘heart’ references and shows how the heart is truly at the ‘heart of the matter’.

The following is a selection of over 300 different conditions and expressions of the heart.  They carry valuable spiritual lessons for everyone.
