Defining Attributes of God

There are many beautiful, revealing attributes of God throughout the Bible.

In the New Testament, it is written:

The Lord Jesus Christ Himself said: “ ‘He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.’ “ – Mark 12:27.  Those who believe in Christ Jesus will see eternal life.

Stephen, “saw the glory of God” – Acts 7:55, as the Jewish council was stoning him to death after his strong testimony for the Lord Jesus Christ.  Stephen was the first martyr of Christianity following the Lord’s death, resurrection, and glorious ascension.  Some could argue that John the Baptist was also a Christian martyr since he too was a believer of Christ.  “The God of glory” is also in Psalm 29:3.

The apostle Paul called Him “the God of hope” in his prayer: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing…” – Romans 15:13.

Paul also called Him ‘the God of patience and consolation,’ [in the KJV], ‘the God who gives perseverance and encouragement’ [in the NASB] while urging his fellow Christians “to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus” – Romans 15:5.

To both the Philippians and the Thessalonians, Paul wrote about: “the God of peace” – Philippians 4:9; “may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely” – 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

To the Christians at Corinth, Paul said “God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction” – 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.  Then further in the same epistle he assured them that, “the God of love and peace” would be with them – 2 Corinthians 13:11.

The author of Hebrews wrote: “Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord…” – Hebrews 13:20.

A beautiful description was written by the apostle Peter.  “The God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” – 1 Peter 5:10.

The one attribute of God we know above all else: His great love for us!  ” ‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.’ ” – John 3:16.  And we are instructed , “If God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 John 4:11. Not just instructed, but commanded to do so: ” ‘A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.’ ” – John 13:34.

Summarizing these beautiful attributes of God in the New Testament: He is the God of the living, the God of glory, the God of hope, the God of patience and consolation/perseverance and encouragement, the God of peace, the God of all comfort, the God of all grace and the God of love!
