Can you Fall Away OR is it Once Saved, Always Saved?

Can you Fall Away OR is it Once Saved, Always Saved?

To Fall Away: to have once been in the faith, to have once been a believer in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour – and then to turn away from those soul-saving beliefs and doctrines

Once Saved, Always Saved: is the position that no matter what a person does, after he comes to the Lord, he will remain saved

Here is a selection of scripture verses revealing, without a doubt, that a true believer can indeed lose his salvation if he falls away:

“The backslider in heart will have his fill of his own ways, but a good man will be satisfied with his.” – Proverbs 14:14

“Why then has this people, Jerusalem, turned away in continual apostasy?  They hold fast to deceit, they refuse to return.” – Jeremiah 8:5

They have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away. – Mark 4:17

I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

“As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.” – John 6:66

“But I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” – 1 Corinthians 9:27

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.” – 1 Corinthians 10:12

“But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 11:3

“Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!” – 2 Corinthians 13:5

“I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel.” – Galatians 1:6

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1

“You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.” – Galatians 5:4

“For now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord.” – 1 Thessalonians 3:8

“For some have already turned aside to follow Satan.” – 1 Timothy 5:15

“For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.” – Hebrews 2:1

“Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God.” – Hebrews 3:12

“But My righteous one shall live by faith; and if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” – Hebrews 10:38

“But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.” – Hebrews 10:39

“See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.  For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.” – Hebrews 12:15-17

“See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking.  For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven.” – Hebrews 12:25

“Be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness.” – 2 Peter 3:17

” ‘Return to Me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord of hosts.” – Malachi 3:7

He who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.  He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it. – Matthew 10:38-39

See to it that no one misleads you. – Matthew 24:4

At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another.  Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. … But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. – Matthew 24:10-13

You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. – Mark 13:13

By your patient endurance, you will gain your souls. – Luke 21:19

But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place and to stand before the Son of Man. – Luke 21:36

Abide in Me, and I in you. … If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away … and cast … into the fire and they are burned. – John 15:4-6

“Branches were broken off … they were broken off for their unbelief … behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.  And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.” – Romans 11:19-23

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?” – 1 Corinthians 6:9

“Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.” – Galatians 6:1

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.  For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” – Galatians 6:7-8

“Just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” – Philippians 2:12

“Stand firm in the Lord.” – Philippians 4:1

“With regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message … Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed.” – 2 Thessalonians 2:2-3

“But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.” – 1 Timothy 4:1

“Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.” – 1 Timothy 4:16

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” – 2 Timothy 4:3-4

“Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.” – 2 Timothy 4:10

“For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.” –   Hebrews 6:4-6

“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.” – Hebrews 10:26-27

“It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” – Hebrews 10:31

“Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.” – 2 Peter 1:10-11

“For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.  For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.” – 2 Peter 2:20-21

A dog returns to its own vomit, and a sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire. – 2 Peter 2:22

“And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner?” – 1 Peter 4:18

“There is a sin leading to death.” – 1 John 5:16

He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life. – Revelation 3:5

(To erase means his name once was written in the book of life – that he once was a believer in Jesus Christ.  However he fell away from the Truth and returned to the hell-bound sins of the secular world.)
