The Darkness of Hell

For believers in the Lord Jesus Christ: “And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them.” – Revelation 22:5

The Bible reveals that “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” – 1 John 1:5.  In the ages to come, there will be no more darkness for those living in the Lord’s presence.

But what is this darkness, and where did it come from?  God provides the answer: “I am the Lord, and there is none else…I form the light, and create darkness” – Isaiah 45:6-7.  Light was always in and with God, but the darkness had to be created!  And, it has a purpose, serving as a contrast to the light.

Men and women were created to love and have fellowship with their Creator, not as robots, but in freedom.  Darkness thus served as a choice that could be made against God and the light, for those so minded.  Satan and his hosts of fallen angels and wicked spirits have become “the rulers of the darkness of this world” – Ephesians 6:12.

The tragedy is that ever since Adam, men have “loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” – John 3:19. By their own freedom of choice, many, many people are “walking in the darkness” – 1 John 1:6 and are “living in darkness” – Matthew 4:16 and are practicing “works of darkness” – Romans 13:12 so therefore are destined for “the blackness of darkness for ever” – Jude 1:13.

The penalty of wickedness and rebellion to God will be to spend eternity in that darkness, a black darkness, forever.

“Terrors come upon him, complete darkness is held in reserve…fire will devour him; it will consume…the heavens will reveal his iniquity…this is the wicked man’s portion from God.” – Job 20:25-29

“The wicked ones are silenced in darkness.” – 1 Samuel 2:9

“He will not escape from darkness; The flame will wither his shoots, And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.” – Job 15:30

“Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.” – Psalm 88:6

“But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” – Matthew 8:12

“Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” – Matthew 22:13

“And throw out the worthless servant into the outer darkness; in that place [of grief and torment] there will be weeping [over sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [over distress and anger].” – Matthew 25:30 [AMP version]

Note the stark contrasts: “For what partnership can righteousness have with lawlessness? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and Belial (Satan)? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?” – 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 [AMP version]

“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment,” – 2 Peter 2:4

“…forsaking the right way, they have gone astray…for whom the black darkness has been reserved.” – 2 Peter 2:15-17

“And angels who did not keep their own designated place of power, but abandoned their proper dwelling place, [these] He has kept in eternal chains under [the thick gloom of utter] darkness for the judgment of the great day.” – Jude 1:6 [AMP version]

“These men…defile the flesh, and reject authority…these men revile the things which they do not understand…by these things they are destroyed…they have gone the way of Cain…for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever.” – Jude 1:8-13

The Lord God Almighty has given the world plenty of warning.

Darkness was Egypt’s ninth plague.  “Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness which may be felt.” – Exodus 10:21.

It will be the same in the End Times.  The fifth bowl of God’s wrath will be darkness upon the Beast’s kingdom.  “Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain.” – Revelation 16:10.

Darkness is one, just one, of God’s punishments against the wicked.  Severe, terrifying and torturous.  It will be a dreadful, major judgment on the Day of the Lord.

“And it will growl over it in that day like the roaring of the sea.  If one looks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress; Even the light is darkened by its clouds.” – Isaiah 5:30

“A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness.” – Joel 2:2

“Will not the day of the Lord be darkness instead of light, Even gloom with no brightness in it?” – Amos 5:20

“But with an overrunning flood He will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue His enemies.” – Nahum 1:8

“A day of wrath is that day, A day of trouble and distress, A day of destruction and desolation,  A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness.” – Zephaniah 1:15
