“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion,
seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith …” – 1 Peter 5:8-9
This grave warning concerning the devil was given not only to young Christians, easily subject to temptations, but also to “the elders among you” – 1 Peter 5:1. It often seems, in fact, that Satan’s greatest victories are won when he can cause the fall of a Christian leader, thereby not only destroying that leader’s influence for Christ but also giving “occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme” – 2 Samuel 12:14. The devil is a roaring lion, but he doesn’t come as such. If he did, the intended victim would flee.
He is, above all, the one “who deceives the whole world” – Revelation 12:9, “for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” – 2 Corinthians 11:14. As he did with Mother Eve, the ‘subtle’ one will insidiously appeal to our pride, or our aesthetic sense; or our appetite; or our desire for material things.
Peter could speak from bitter experience. Satan had desired to “ ‘sift you like wheat’ ” – Luke 22:31 – Jesus had told him, but he foolishly boasted that he would stand true – “ ‘Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!’ “ – Luke 22:33, but Peter would then very quickly deny the Lord three times, even before dawn the following day.
No wonder Peter could warn with such urgency: be sober, be on the alert, be vigilant. Note particularly that, in the context, he is especially warning against greed – “not for sordid gain” – 1 Peter 5:2 and pride – “therefore humble yourselves” – 1 Peter 5:6. We must not allow Satan to ‘get an advantage of us,’ Paul says, “for we are not ignorant of his schemes” – 2 Corinthians 2:11.
Though Satan is deceptive and powerful, we need never fall to his tempting if we simply – along with staying sober and vigilant – “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.“ – James 4:7.

The Temptation of Jesus:
Immediately following Jesus’ baptism by John, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness where the devil tempted the Lord – with the three categories of mankind’s basic areas of temptations.
- First, the fleshly (the bodily/physical) temptation: “The tempter came and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ But He answered and said, “ ‘It is written, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” ‘ “ – Matthew 4:3-4 – Jesus quoting Deuteronomy 8:3.
- Then the temptation of pride (mind/spirit): “Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, “He will command His angels concerning You; and on their hands they will bear You up, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.” ‘ Jesus said to him, ‘On the other hand, it is written, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Matthew 4:5-7 – Jesus quoting Deuteronomy 6:16.
- The temptation of covetousness (the soul): “Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, ‘All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.” ‘ ” – Matthew 4:8-10 – Jesus quoting Deuteronomy 6:13-14.
“Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.” – Matthew 4:11.
Note that Jesus quoted scripture in each of His three responses. God’s Word is our greatest weapon against Satan.
“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.’ – Hebrews 4:15
“For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” – Hebrews 2:18

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” – Ephesians 6:11-12
