Hell – The Lake of Fire – The Second Death

There are many articles on the internet about Hell.  Some are Biblical, some are heretical.

The Bible makes it very clear: hell is real and all the unrepentant unbelievers will be tormented in the lake of fire, forever.

Hell, is also called: the Lake of Fire – Second Death – Gehenna.  The exact phrase: ‘Lake of Fire’, is used only in the Book of Revelation.  It is written four times: Revelation 19:20; 20:10; 20:14 and 20:15.  The first time is when the Beast and the false prophet are thrown into it – forever – immediately following their defeat by the Lord Jesus Christ at Armageddon.  Then after the 1,000 year reign of Christ, the devil – Satan – is thrown into the lake of fire – forever.  After the great white throne judgment, death and Hades are thrown into it – forever.  “And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:15 – All unbelievers are thrown into the lake of fire – the second death – hell – forever and ever. 

Hades and Death, are also called: – the grave – the abyss (in Greek: abussos) – bottomless pit – pits of darkness – chains of darkness – prison – dungeon – Tartarus (2 Peter 2:4) – Sheol – Abaddon (Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11) – fallen Babylon (Revelation 18:2) – Abraham’s bosom – Paradise.  It’s the current, temporary holding area of all the unsaved dead – like a county jail – up until the great white throne judgment, at which point they will all be thrown into the lake of fire – forever.

Sheol (Old Testament equivalent of Hades and Death in the New Testament):

“Grievous punishment is for him who forsakes the way; he who hates reproof will die.  Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord.” – Proverbs 15:11

“We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have made a pact.” – Isaiah 28:15 – the prophet Isaiah is warning Judah against this apostasy – how so very similar to today’s ‘make a deal with the devil’ corruption

“For a fire is kindled in My anger; and burns to the lowest part of Sheol, and consumes the earth with its yield, and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.” – Deuteronomy 32:22

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?  Or where can I flee from Your presence?  If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.” – Psalm 139:7-8  – the Lord is Creator – He is God – He rules – forever

“He who goes down to Sheol does not come up.  He will not return …” – Job 7:9

There is no repenting of your sins after death – you must come to the Lord Jesus now and be saved, while you still can.

Hell was designed originally for Satan and his fallen angels:

“ ‘Then He will also say to those on His left, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.” ‘ “- Matthew 25:41

“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell [Greek: Tartarus], putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment.” – 2 Peter 2:4

“For Topheth has long been ready, indeed, it has been prepared for the king.  He has made it deep and large, a pyre of fire with plenty of wood; the breath of the Lord, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.” – Isaiah 30:33

“I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire.” – Daniel 7:11

The beast and the false prophet are the first two to be thrown into the lake of fire – immediately following Armageddon.  The Devil will be thrown into the lake of fire after the 1,000 year reign of Christ.  Then there will be the great white throne judgment where the wicked are judged and they too will be thrown into the lake of fire – forever.

The wicked will be thrown into the lake of fire:

“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” – Revelation 21:8

There will be both spiritual and bodily torment in hell – forever:

Hell is forever, eternal, everlasting, irreversible – you can’t change your mind, repent and get out of hell later.  Annihilation is a heresy created to keep the wicked from knowing the Truth:

“’ in that place there will be weeping’ ” – Luke 13:28 (people are weeping – they are repenting – but it’s too late for them)

“O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.” – Hosea 13:14

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.” – Galatians 6:7

“ ‘These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.’ ” – Matthew 25:46

Hell is Separation from the Lord:

No rest nor peace in hell:

“they have no rest day and night” – Revelation 14:11

Their worm will not die:

Weeping and gnashing of teeth:

A Heresy: Satan rules in Hell – FALSE.  It is the Lamb who rules:

“And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” – Revelation 20:10

describing the wicked: “… will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb” – Revelation 14:10 – the Lord rules

Another Heresy: all are eventually saved – FALSE:

“ ‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.’ ” – John 3:16 – if you don’t have the Lord Jesus in your life you will spend eternity in hell

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” – John 3:36

“ ‘He who is not with Me is against Me.’ ” – Matthew 12:30
