Crowns for God’s People

Crowns mean: reward, victory and honor.  The Bible talks about five possible crowns that will be given to God’s people, at Jesus’ judgment following the Rapture.

“ ‘Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.’ ” – Revelation 22:12

“ ‘I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have so that no one will take your crown.’ ” – Revelation 3:11

Crown of Righteousness:

The Crown of Righteousness is for all believers who remain faithful to the Lord.  This crown is given to those who have lived a righteous and holy life for God.  They are those who love the appearing of Christ, who anxiously wait and look for the day when He will return for His saints:

  • “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8
  • “For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.” – Galatians 5:5
  • “And may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through the faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith.” – Philippians 3:9

The Victor’s Crown/The Everlasting Crown/The Incorruptible Crown:

This is also called the Imperishable Crown.  This crown is given to believers who faithfully run the race that crucify every selfish desire in the flesh, and point men to Jesus.  You basically run whatever race that God has set out for you and be the best you can be for God.  Be willing to make whatever sacrifices you have to, to successfully complete the mission that God set out for you:

  • “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?  Run in such a way that you may win.  Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things.  They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” – 1 Corinthians 9:24-25
  • “Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” – 1 Corinthians 9:26-27
  • “… let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” – Hebrews 12:1-3

Crown of Rejoicing/The Soul Winner’s Crown:

This crown is for those who are witnesses to others, who lead souls to Jesus, to the saving grace of God.  To save an unbeliever headed for eternity in hell is the greatest thing you can possibly do.  Each one of us is commanded to do our part to reach the lost, to lead as many as possible to Jesus Christ.  God has a plan for you in your life to witness and work for Him if you allow Him.  Save a family member, a friend, a co-worker, a stranger, today:

  • “For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it … For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation?  Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?  For you are our glory and joy.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
  • “Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.” – Philippians 4:1.  Note Paul wrote ‘joy and crown’, showing rejoicing and crown go hand in hand.

Crown of Life:

The Crown of Life is for those believers who persevere in their faith even under persecution, possibly even to death.  Church history abounds with the stories of believers remaining faithful in cases of severe trial and persecution, and the Bible promises them a special crown:

  • “ ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer.  Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days.  Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.’ ” – Revelation 2:10
  • “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” – James 1:12

Crown of Glory/Crown for Service:

The Crown of Glory is for every person who ‘feeds the flock’ – the pastors, teachers, every person carrying out the great commission, etc.:

  • “I exhort the elders among you … shepherd the flock of God among you … and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.” – 1 Peter 5:1-4

From a Crown of Thorns:

Jesus was crowned by the world system with a crown of thorns, at His crucifixion.

  • “And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and the knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ ” – Matthew 27:29

To a Crown of Glory and Honor:

Then after His ascension, He was exalted and crowned by the heavenly Father with glory and honor:

  • “ ‘You have made Him for a little while lower than the angels; You have crowned Him with glory and honor.’ ” – Hebrews 2:7 quoting Psalm 8:5
  • “But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.” – Hebrews 2:9

“His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon Himself His crown shall shine. ” – Psalm 132:18

Jesus Christ’s Golden Crown:

“Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man,                                                              having a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand.” – Revelation 14:14

“His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems;                                                                                                       and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.”                                           –                                                                                                   Revelation 19:12

“Bless the Lord, O my soul … and forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion.” – Psalm 103:1-4

“You crown the year with Your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.” – Psalm 65:11

“In that day the Lord of hosts will become a beautiful crown and a glorious diadem to the remnant of His people.” – Isaiah 28:5
