“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.” – 1 Chronicles 29:11
This is one of the great doxologies of Scripture, originally a part of King David’s prayer at the time of Solomon’s coronation as his successor. Although David and Solomon were the greatest kings of Israel, and two of the greatest kings in the world of their age, David rightly acknowledged that the Lord Himself was the true King, not only of Israel, but of all heaven and earth. He is head, the supreme ruler, over all.
This is the first occurrence in Scripture of the great testimony of worship: ‘Thine is the kingdom’. In the modern world, however, there are relatively few who acknowledge Him as King of creation. Except for a small minority, most people believe that the universe has evolved and man is king.
But David’s prayer will be echoed again in the great prayer of the twenty-four elders: “ ‘Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honour and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.’ ” – Revelation 4:11. Myriads and myriads of angels will exalt the Lamb: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing.” – Revelation 5:12. “Every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them” will say: “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honour and glory and dominion forever and ever.” – Revelation 5:13. Then, following the Tribulation, the twenty-four elders will once again pray: “ ‘We give You thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign.’ ” – Revelation 11:17.
“But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain…now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth…how blessed are all who take refuge in Him.” – Psalm 2:6, 10, 12. Someday soon, “at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – Philippians 2:10.
In that day, “No longer will there be any curse. The Throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and His servants will serve Him.” – Revelation 22:3.
