“Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory, because of Your love and faithfulness.” – Psalm 115:1

One of the great words of the Bible is the word ‘glory’, and it should be evident that glory belongs to God, not man.  Indeed, the very “heavens declare the glory of God” – Psalm 19:1.  Not only do the heavens declare His glory, but “His glory is above the heavens” – Psalm 113:4, and “the glory of the Lord shall endure for ever” – Psalm 104:31.  In heaven, the mighty hosts of angels “give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name” – Psalm 29:2.

“Who is this King of glory?  The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.  Selah.” – Psalm 24:10.

“The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14.  

In the days of His flesh, His glory was veiled however, except in His life, words of grace and truth, and mighty works.  He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” – Philippians 2:7-8.

When the Lord Jesus miraculously turned water into wine at the wedding in Galilee, He “manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him” – John 2:11.

On one occasion Christ’s glory shone through even in a physical sense: “And as He prayed, the fashion of His countenance was altered, and…they saw His glory” – Luke 9:29-32, on the Mount of the Transfiguration.

In the upper room just before His betrayal, the Lord Jesus prayed to His Father, remembering, “ ‘Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.’ ” – John 17:5.

His glory seemed to be gone forever as He lay in a borrowed tomb.  But then “God…raised Him up from the dead, and gave Him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God” – 1 Peter 1:21.

As He ascended back to heaven, all His hosts of angels welcomed their Lord of hosts with a mighty anthem of praise: “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory?  The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.” – Psalm 24:9-10.

He is now “the Lord of glory” – James 2:1; “who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” – Hebrews 1:3.

Angels exalt the Lamb in a scene before the throne, and  in heaven.  “The number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.’ “ – Revelation 5:11-12.

There is also a great day coming, “…looking for the blessed hope and the appearance of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Christ Jesus” – Titus 2:13, when the ascended Lord will return, “ ‘coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory’ ” – Matthew 24:30, even as “the glory of the Lord shone round about them” – Luke 2:9, at His first coming.

Once again the angels will praise the Lord with glory when the great multitude stands before the throne.  “…and all the angels were standing around the throne…and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, ‘Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever.  Amen.’ ” – Revelation 7:11-12.

The Lord Jesus Christ is worshiped with glory at the wedding ceremony.  “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” – Revelation 19:7.

His glory will be present forever when the new heaven and earth come – Revelation 21:1-10, “having the glory of God” – Revelation 21:11.

“And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.” – Revelation 21:23.

Some final Scripture passages on the Lord’s glory:

In this present age, the body of each believer “is the temple of the Holy Spirit” and believers are instructed to “therefore glorify God in your body” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

“For God …hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 4:6.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” – Titus 2:11-13

“…grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity.  Amen.” – 2 Peter 3:18

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.  Amen.” – Jude 1:24-25

Indeed, the Lord’s Prayer ends with:

“ ‘…for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.’ “ – Matthew 6:13
