“For our God is a consuming fire.” – Hebrews 12:29

The following is a selection of scripture verses on how God’s fire always has been and always will be central in His great and eternal plan:

Old Testament:

“So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.” – Genesis 3:24

“Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven.” – Genesis 19:24

“The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush.” – Exodus 3:2 – The Lord’s glory appeared as a fire

“There was hail, and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail, very severe, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.” – Exodus 9:24

“The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light.” – Exodus 13:21

“To the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.” – Exodus 24:17

“For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.” – Exodus 40:38

“Then fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar.” – Leviticus 9:24

“Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the Lord; and when the Lord heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.” – Numbers 11:1

“Fire also came forth from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.” – Numbers 16:35

“Then the Lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire.” – Deuteronomy 4:12

“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” – Deuteronomy 4:24

“The Lord spoke to you face to face at the mountain from the midst of the fire.” – Deuteronomy 5:4 – receiving the Ten Commandments

“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.” – 1 Kings 18:38

“As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them.  And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.” – 2 Kings 2:11

“Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’  And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” – 2 Kings 6:17

“The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.” – Psalm 46:6

“May our God come and not keep silence; fire devours before Him, and it is very tempestuous around Him.” – Psalm 50:3

“When I select an appointed time, it is I who judge with equity.  The earth and all who dwell in it melt; it is I who have firmly set its pillars.” – Psalm 75:2-3

“He gave over their cattle also to the hailstones and their herds to bolts of lightning.  He sent upon them His burning anger, fury and indignation and trouble, a band of destroying angels.” – Psalm 78:48-49

“The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord.” – Psalm 97:5

“He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to illumine by night.” – Psalm 105:39

“He casts forth His ice as fragments; Who can stand before His cold?  He sends forth His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow and the waters to flow.” – Psalm 147:17-18

“Its flashes are flashes of fire the very flame of the Lord.” – Solomon 8:6

“When the Lord has washed away the filth … by the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burning, then the Lord will create … the brightness of a flaming fire by night.” – Isaiah 4:4-5

“By the fury of the Lord of hosts the land is burned up, and the people are like fuel for the fire.” – Isaiah 9:19

“The inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.” – Isaiah 24:6

“The Lord will cause His voice of authority to be heard … and in the flame of a consuming fire in cloudburst, downpour and hailstones.” – Isaiah 30:30

“My breath will consume you like a fire.” – Isaiah 33:11

“For behold, the Lord will come in fire and His chariots like the whirlwind, to render His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire.  For the Lord will execute judgment by fire and by His sword on all flesh, and those slain by the Lord will be many.” – Isaiah 66:15-16

“My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds.” – Jeremiah 4:4

“Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.” – Jeremiah 7:20

“His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones.” – Jeremiah 20:9 (God’s Word is also God’s fire.  It is far better to be refined with the fire of God’s Word than to be consumed by His judgment fire.)

“… that My wrath may not go forth like fire and burn with none to extinguish it, because of the evil of their deeds.” – Jeremiah 21:12

” ‘Is not My word like fire?’ declares the Lord.” – Jeremiah 23:29

“In the tent of the daughter of Zion He has poured out His wrath like fire.” – Lamentations 2:4

“I will pour out My indignation on you; I will blow on you with the fire of My wrath.” – Ezekiel 21:31

“As they gather silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into the furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath and I will lay you there and melt you.” – Ezekiel 22:20

“I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted in the midst of it.” – Ezekiel 22:21

“As silver is melted in the furnace, so you will be melted in the midst of it; and you will know that I, the Lord, have poured out My wrath on you.” – Ezekiel 22:22

“ ‘Thus I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads,’ declares the Lord God.” – Ezekiel 22:31

“Surely in the fire of My jealousy I haven spoken against the rest of the nations.” – Ezekiel 36:5

“I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!” – Daniel 3:25

“… His throne was ablaze with flames, its wheels were a burning fire.  A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before Him …” – Daniel 7:9-10

“The Lord God of hosts, the One who touches the land so that it melts, and all those who dwell in it mourn …” – Amos 9:5

“The mountains will melt under Him and the valleys will be split, like wax before the fire, like water poured down a steep place.  All this is for the rebellion of Jacob and for the sins …” – Micah 1:4

“All of her earnings will be burned with fire and all of her images I will make desolate.” – Micah 1:7

“The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished … the hills dissolve … who can endure the burning of His anger?  His wrath is poured out like fire …” – Nahum 1:3-6

“On the day of the Lord’s wrath; and all the earth will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy, for He will make a complete end, indeed a terrifying one, of all the inhabitants of the earth.” – Zephaniah 1:18

“ ‘Therefore wait for Me,’ declares the Lord ‘For the day when I rise up as a witness.  Indeed, My decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out on them My indignation, all My burning anger, for all the earth will be devoured by the fire of My zeal.’ ” – Zephaniah 3:8

New Testament:

“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” – Matthew 3:11

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” – Matthew 24:35

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” – Mark 13:31

“John answered and said to them all, ‘As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ ” – Luke 3:16-17

“There appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.” – Acts 2:3-4

“Each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.” – 1 Corinthians 3:13

“Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:19

“But a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.” – Hebrews 10:27

The Book of Revelation:

“His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire.  His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.” – Revelation 1:14-15

“Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder.  And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.” – Revelation 4:5

“If anyone wants to harm them [the two witnesses], fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies.” – Revelation 11:5

“The first [trumpet] sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.” – Revelation 8:7

“The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea.” – Revelation 8:8-9

“The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch …” – Revelation 8:10-11

“the horses  and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire … and out of the horses’ mouths proceed fire … a third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone.” – Revelation 9:17-18

“If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God … and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.  And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever.” – Revelation 14:9-11

“The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given to it to scorch men with fire.  Men were scorched with fierce heat.” – Revelation 16:8-9

“In one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her is strong.  The kings of the earth … see the smoke of her burning.” – Revelation 18:8-9

“I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire.” – Revelation 15:2

“The ten horns … and the beast will hate the harlot … and will burn her with fire.” – Revelation 17:16

“I saw another strong angel … and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.” – Revelation 10:1

“The angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar, and threw it to the earth.” – Revelation 8:5

“His eyes are a flame of fire.” – Revelation 19:12

“The beast was seized, and with him the false prophet … these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.” – Revelation 19:20

“They came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them.” – Revelation 20:9

“The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone.” – Revelation 20:10

“If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:15

“Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.  This is the second death, the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:14

“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” – Revelation 21:8

 

2 Peter 3:

“But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.” – 2 Peter 3:7

“The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.” – 2 Peter 3:10

“Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat.” – 2 Peter 3:11-12

 

Make no mistake – we are in the End Times.

“While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” – John 12:36
